Brian Lohnes on Instagram: "Wait, it that a....? Yep! This is Art Arfons’ Green Monster 19 and yep, it was a front engine turbine powered dragster! Built to race in IHRA and AHRA top fuel during the early 1970s, a GE T-58 turbine engine spun through a 2:1 gear reduction box to power the rear axle. With 1,850hp and a weight of 250lbs, the engine propelled the car to many 200+ mph runs in the very low 7s and occasionally high 6-second zone. The car was never able to qualify for a top fuel show although they did make first alternate status at least once in 1972. The car was retired about that time and the engine went into a pulling tractor as Arfons took turbines to that sport and became a national force. Green Monster 19 has been recreated by Tim Arfons and he makes runs in it a few times a year. If you ever get the chance to see it in person, do it! #dragracing #turbine #horsepower #badass #unique #greenmonster #green #speed #crazy #unique #awesome"
