In 1961 Ms. Melder of Austin, Texas had her heart set on purchasing a new Porsche 356, but quickly learned the model was $1,000 over her budget and the next best thing was a Corvette. So, she headed down to Capital Chevrolet and special-ordered this car with a signal-seeking radio, deluxe heater, whitewall tires, and a hardtop-only configuration. For the next 45 years she drove it regularly to work until finally retiring it to occasional weekend use.
