STREAM: Porting 16-bit Windows 1.0 Applications to 64-Bit Windows 11 - YouT
The very first retro-computing video on this channel was working Windows 1.0 software development. I now want to take a look what it takes to port software across the generations, specifically, seeing what it takes to port an application from Windows 1.0 to Windows 3.1, then to Windows 9x/NT, then XP, and finally to Windows 11. Microsoft included a fair number of example applications with Windows 1.0, including Hello World, Cardfile, and more, and over the years, a few people have written or ported other demo applications such as Wine's version of Minesweeper. One thing I'm more curious in documenting more in-depth is seeing what it takes to bring software across the almost 40 year gap from the 16-bit era to the 32-bit one. The plan is to setup a development environment on Windows 1.0, compile several of the demo applications, then switch to Windows 3.1, migrate them to Visual C++ format, then make the jump to 32-bit computing on Windows NT and Visual C++ 4.2 or 6, then XP, and finally 11. In theory, this should be a relatively straightforward affair, and maybe we'll even dig out FAILSERV and try it on Itanium. Come join your host NCommander on Sunday, November 14th, for livestreaming fun and more. See you all then

Repairing An Explosive Compaq Portable I - YouTube
Once again, I've been summoned to perform computer necromancy, in this case, in the form of a Compaq Portable I who my friend sirocyl "helpfully" brought to my apartment. The Portable I is an interesting piece of history given it was the machine that marked the end of IBM's monopoly over the personal computer, and was the first "fully compatible" IBM PC clone. My socials: Twitter: https://twitter.com/FOSSfirefighter Discord: https://discord.gg/V8esNah Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ncommander Blog: https://casadevall.pro While IBM would face early challenges with "functionally compatible" and "DOS compatible" machines, COMPAQ was the first to proudly proclaim 100% compatibility. In what would be a famous case of reverse engineering, Compaq fully documented and re-engineered the BIOS of the 5150, and created their own functionally identical replacement of IBM's code. This, combined with a licensed copy of DOS and GW-BASIC made the Compaq almost perfectly compatible with the 5150, with the only truly notable difference being the lack of cassette port. Compaq would also go as far to create their own clone of IBM's Color/Graphics Adapter in the form of the Video Display Unit, or VDU card. This specific Portable was found on Goodwill Auctions by sirocyl in unknown condition. It's also one of the rarer, two floppy drive models, and a look at its system board shows that its one of the earliest revisions of Compaq Portable. Included is a full 256k of RAM, and BIOS chips from 1986. When I got it, the Portable was entirely dead, and required extensive work even to determine what was wrong with it. This is also not including problems with the power supply, VDU card, or shorted capacitors which all made themselves known throughout the process. I got this survivor Compaq Portable a while back and after a little bit of use it's keyboard gave out. Time to get it fixed and also take a closer look at the computer itself. This thing has had a lot harder of a life than I would have guessed. I even realized after the video was done that I think it survived a fire because the inside has some black power coating some parts. I'm so glad the previous owner seemed to enjoy it so much as to keep it going for so long. If you have a Compaq Portable(Or Apple Lisa as well) with a bad keyboard I highly recommend TexElec's pad replacements: https://texelec.com/product/foam-capacitive-pads-keytronic/ I'm really grooving on having this keyboard fixed and being able to use the computer now. It's rapidly becoming one of my favourite vintage computers.
